Mash-up, warp, bend, twist - CoLab (the interdisciplinary creative technology centre at AUT University and The Big Idea website (the online home of New Zealand’s creative community) are calling for applications from creative practitioners and artists interested in being The Big Idea’s first online artist-in-residence. In a first for New Zealand, the CoLab | TBI Online Digital Residency is part of the CoLab development strategy to support innovation, the creation of new digital art work and collaboration.
The key objectives of the CoLab | TBI Online Residency are:
- To support the development of innovative projects which encourage engagement, capability and confidence with new technologies
- To facilitate creative and professional development opportunities for digital artists and The Big Idea community
- To foster dialogue and exchange between CoLab members, partners and the public
- To engage The Big Idea community in the process and output of a digital arts collaboration
The artist chosen for the virtual residency will have a unique opportunity to use The Big Idea website as both the source and the location for an online project that engages The Big Idea community and CoLab’s constituency.
Based in Auckland, the residency is for two months between September and October 2010. While working in the virtual space on The Big Idea, the artist will also work with CoLab making a contribution to a public programme and exploring the potential for an article in an international journal publication.

- CoLab
CoLab is an interdisciplinary creative technology centre. It aims to facilitate and promote creative practices, research and development, knowledge sharing, innovation and collaboration. CoLab is based on a partnership between AUT University, MIC Toi Rerehiko and arts organizations, practitioners, educational institutions, commercial enterprises, technology developers, industry bodies and communities. It supports the development and public dissemination of hybrid ideas, research and creative practices through converging technologies, innovative formats, modes and networks. In so doing, it forms a community of enquiry and a physical meeting-ground for creative expression, new media industries and trans-disciplinary educators.
