Mad Des Flying Solo at The Wine Cellar
Coming straight from a sold out season at the SCRATCH New Writing Festival 2011, Kate Vox, winner of the ‘Best New Talent’ (Short+Sweet Festival Auckland 2011), has cleverly devised a new show for her comedy stock character, Madame Desiree, that is a hoot and a half! Audience feedback from SCRATCH has labeled the fortune telling Mistress of Destiny in one word as “Revelatory (a seriously-brilliant character!)”
Devised initially during her time at Unitec School of Performing Arts in 2010, Kate is bringing Madame Desiree out for a third romp and a play with some newly devised material centering around the Art of Finding Summer Love in her latest tribute to Auckland’s’ singles scene, ‘Mad Des Flying Solo’.
With a focus on improvisational comedy hung upon a basic dramatic skeleton, Mad Des relies upon the audience on the night to help her flesh out her ‘games’. “I wanted to do something that could never become old and tired as it very much relies on the ability to play, and improvise comedy on the turn of a dime. Naturally, I’m terrified, because all I can do is research, prep and hope for the best. It’s the base jumping of Standup Comedy”, says recent graduate, Kate Vox.
Vox has been heavily involved with acting and directing in her first year out of drama school with both Catalyst Theatre Company and The Outfit, including smash-hit production ‘The Sex Show’ which took out the STAMP award at this years’ Auckland Fringe Festival. Her directorial debut, ‘Celebration of Life’, written by prolific Auckland Playwright Sally Sutton, also picked up ‘Best Wild Card Entrant’ at Short+Sweet this year.
Mad Des Flying Solo is further opportunity to test this new comer’s ability to put her finger on the pulse of Auckland’s thriving ‘underground’ theatre scene. So if you want to see the “Sassycosmic” comedy stylings of Auckland’s new “nasal Chakra Queen”, then head along to the Wine Cellar on the 13th, you won’t be disappointed!
