Freestore Waitakere cleared out
A new shop in west Auckland offering free food that would normally be thrown out by supermarkets has been cleared out in about an hour on its opening day.
People started queuing at 7am outside the trial Freestore Waitakere, and the groceries were exhausted in about an hour, TV3's Campbell Live reported.
Freestore Waitakere aimed to provide a service but could not guarantee stock would be available, its founder Kim Paton said.
"There's a lot of people struggling that just seem to slip through the cracks and just don't meet the criteria for whatever reason," Henderson-Massey board chairwoman Vanessa Neeson told Newstalk ZB.
The food would normally be thrown away by supermarkets and includes damaged items or those with reject packaging.
