Sculpture Wanganui 2011 announced
Wanganui District Council is now calling for entries for Sculpture Wanganui 2011 and its associated symposium, which will be held on May 9 and 10.
Sculpture Wanganui is an annual public arts event which aims to place Wanganui and the Whanganui River on the national and international sculptural arts map.
A Wanganui District Council initiative, this event aspires to promote and provide excellence in sited public sculpture through an annual competition and symposium. Wanganui District Council is the major stakeholder, providing the bulk of the funding and the sculpture site.
The competition is preceded by an open call to artists for proposals from which up to four finalists will be selected. The selection panel will be the Wanganui District Council Public Art Steering Group. These finalists will be invited to construct maquettes of their proposed works which will then be exhibited at Quay Gallery, Wanganui.
The finalists, upon satisfactory completion and exhibition of maquettes and presenting their proposal at the symposium, will each receive a payment of NZ$2,000.00
One winning work will be selected from the finalists by an external expert judge Rob Garrett.
The Judge’s Award recipient will receive NZ$50,000 upon satisfactory installation of sculptural work at a site pre-determined by the Wanganui District Council.
A People’s Choice award will be selected through public ballot. The People’s Choice Award recipient will receive an additional NZ$5,000.
