Tantrum Design Gallery opens in Newton

Born and raised in West Auckland and spending summers in the Coromandel,  Shann Whitaker, the founder and artist behind Tantrum Design is influenced by many things.

 Climbing Pine Trees, Catching Skinks, Roald Dahl, Making huts, Back sommersaults, Surfing a wave, Birthdays, Fresh NZ air, Underwater animals, Orange, Kune Kune Pigs, The smell of limes, Chihuly, the Pixies, Wallpaper, Late Afternoons, Traveling on a shoe string, Waterfalls, Laying on hot sand, Cake, Mambo, Patterns, sandcastles and body surfing.

 After spending a year in Denmark studying, Shann went traveling in 1997 and was a freelance artist working in London for clients such as, The Royal Parks Board in Hyde Park, The Imperial Hotel and Contiki Travel. He also completed two exhibitions in Denmark and murals in Greece.He returned to New Zealand in 2002 and had a series of exhibitions in Auckland and the Coromandel, supplying art to several galleries.

 A lack of affordable art for the average homebuyer saw the creation of Tantrum Design in 2004. Using digital printing technology and photography Shann creates pieces of art that are both modern, stylish and affordable. In late 2010 the first Tantrum Design Gallery was opened in central Auckland. Shann’s vision for this new space is a gallery where people can visit an everchanging landscape of ideas and art to brighten and excite ones living space. He is always looking to add new products to the gallery which is influenced by the beautiful surroundings of Aotearoa. Unique affordable art is what tantrum Design is all about and Shann will continue to create pieces influenced by his travels, the environment around him and the latest trends in colour and interiors.
