2011 has kick started with a win at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival. Manurewa, directed by Sam Peacocke, was awarded a Crystal Bear in the Generation 14plus Youth Section of the competition.

Outrageous Fortune star Tammy Davis’ directorial debut Ebony Society and Jackie van Beek’s Go the Dogs also competed in the Generation section of the Festival. The Generation programme receives over 6000 submissions each year and the selection comprises 32 short films and 27 feature length films from 32 countries. The NZFC supported all three directors to attend the festival.

Short film maker Michelle Savill also attended the Berlinale Talent Campus prior to taking up her internship at Killer Films in New York.

In its 33rd year, Festival International du Court Metrage Clermont-Ferrand chose New Zealand as its spotlight country and screened a retrospective of New Zealand short films across six programmes. Nearly 50 films screened, representing the extraordinary depth and breadth of short films made in New Zealand since 1988. Choice Night was selected for competition at Clermont-Ferrand on the heels of winning Best Short Film at Cinema Tous Ecran in Switzerland.

The New Zealand Ambassador to France, Rosemary Banks, attended Clermont-Ferrand and the New Zealand Embassy in Paris also supported two filmmakers to attend the festival and the associated market - Meihana Durie (Warbrick) and Shahir Daud (Double Happy). The NZ Retrospective attracted 9507 viewers, the public loved the programme and the profile of NZ cinema and film makers has been raised by this success. Visitor numbers for the 33rd edition of the Festival were 148,000, the highest ever.

The Premiere Shorts continue on track. Seven new films will deliver in September. Six new films have been green lit for production in 2011.

NEW SHORT FILM MANAGER

Lisa Chatfield joins us as temporary Short Film Manager while Juliette is in the US for a year. Lisa's background includes producing Scarfies and working with Working Title Australia and Eyeworks. She has moved to Wellington after living in Dunedin for four years, the last two years included working at Natural History New Zealand.
