NEW PLAYWRITING AWARD ANNOUNCED FOR 2012
At an awards function at Downstage Theatre, on 23 November, Murray Lynch announced that in PLAYMARKET’s funding agreement for 2012 – 2014, Creative New Zealand have approved a new award – called the Playmarket Award - that will be offered from next year and come with a prize of $20,000.
Murray Lynch has, since his appointment to the role of Director of PLAYMARKET, been lobbying for the resource to offer an award for senior or established playwrights. He says it is widely acknowledged that the number of opportunities to recognise and celebrate our playwrights is a deficit in the arts scene and Creative New Zealand, after conducting its own research, agreed.
The process for deciding the winner will be confirmed next year for this no doubt hotly contested prize.
Lynch says “I am thrilled to be in a position to make this announcement and this time next year we will be awarding the first recipient.”
