see stitching up the gallery | a knitta please project

Held over four days, Magda Sayeg, founder of Knitta Please, and Sydney artist Denise Litchfield transformed the front entrance of the National Art Gallery in Australia. Knitters were invited to help create squares of knitting for the coverings.

Stitching up the NGA is coordinated by the National Gallery of Australia and Knitta Please, a group of radical knitters founded in 2005 in Austin, Texas.

Knitta Please have covered monuments and public spaces around the world with knitting.

People from across Australia and around the world contributed to this project by supplying knitted pieces

The National Gallery of Australia would like to thank everyone involved in this project, with a special thankyou to the volunteers and knitters who have given up their own time and knitting projects.

Knitted coverings by Knitta Please founder Magda Sayeg, Denise Litchfield and volunteers. Installed between Tuesday 7 to Sunday 12 July 2009.
In conjunction with the exhibition Soft sculpture.

Its not just about fashion. I live a life surrounded by textile - in particular wool. Its in my room, in my car, on my desk at work... Designing handknits and selling them is not my sole source of survival but it is what I love. I'm lucky that this love is supported by other things that I love, including working for The Big Idea and also helping to facilitate the careers of emerging artists. I feel truly blessed.
