The name FishHead is based on the earliest name for Wellington, ‘Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui’. Mythological Maori demigod Maui pulled up a giant fish (the North Island) as he was fishing from his waka (the South Island) and the Wellington region became ‘The Head of Maui’s Fish’ - hence FishHead!
