Build a better profile on The Big Idea

Using your toolbox on The Big Idea

The insiders guide on how to pimp your profile on The Big Idea.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to stand out from the crowd. We’ve tried to do the hard work for you, with these simple steps to build your online profile on The Big Idea.

Be found and connect online

A profile on New Zealand’s number one creative community website is a great way to be found, with more than 2000 visitors a day and a high ranking on search engines.

The Big Idea isn’t just about news and events and jobs, it’s about you. It’s about people being able to find you and discover more about you. This can lead to sales, a job, a contract, an exhibition…the networking possibilities are endless.

It also helps you find people including potential collaborators, employers or suppliers. The more we know about each other, the more opportunities there are to help each other.

It all begins with a good profile.

Get started

Click on My Profile, click on the Edit tab and fill out three forms.

• Account settings: Controls your username and password as well as your contact email. Upload an avatar [picture]. The picture size is 150 x 150 pixels. Also tick the contact settings box so that people can contact you directly from any piece of content you have put on the site.

• About: A bit about yourself or your organisation

• Contact details:  Your name and your organisation name. Your phone number, email, website and social networks including Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin.  You don’t need to fill in every field – just the ones where you want people to connect with you. List your Big Idea profile page on directory and selling sites you belong to.

Add more information

There are many ways you can be found on The Big Idea. Here are some places to start.

Professional services listing: If you have a service you can offer to other members of the creative sector

Industry resources listing: Profile your work and services by listing any services or support you offer. It could rehearsel space, funding, advocacy - just choose any options.

Resumes: Add your resume - you can list a summary or detailed resume, attach a document (including a formatted resume and examples of your work) or link to an online resume.

Show: A picture is worth a thousand words so show us what you do and maybe even sell it too. You can show your performance [in video] - which could be a concert, theatre performance, music video or examples of your work.

Adding pictures

You can add up to seven images to anything in SHOW and also on other sections of the site. Use the 'Attached Images' drop down menu above the title block [an option when you are submitting content]. They will crop square [from the centre] and to help with search engine optimisation you should also give them a title.

And even more...

You may [and probably do already] have a website where you want people to do things or see specific information - read your blog, join your mailing list - those sort of things. You can use recommended links to deconstruct your website - these all get added to your profile.

Keep adding to the picture

Build a bigger picture of who you are, what you do and who you connect with on The Big Idea.  Add content regularly - this refreshes search engines and helps you get found.

When you submit content - including jobs, events, gallery items, news stories or comments - it will display in your profile (if you choose to make it public) becoming a showcase and archive of your creative output.

Share your profile

Your profile comes with a unique url that you can send to others.  You can include this on your website, other sites and your email signature.

Share your content

You can share most content by emailing it to a friend or using the social bookmarking sharing button on news stories.
