Nineteen new designers are set to storm the world as they complete the Otago Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Design (Communication) degree.
Three years of dedicated labour are condensed down to seven days of glory in the Last Word exhibition, opening in the old Wickliffe Press building, Albany Street, Dunedin on Tuesday 17th November.
“Last Word represents the leap we are taking from student to designer,” says final year student Daniel Alexander. “This is our chance to prove ourselves as professionals.”
And the students have the opportunity to do just that. Featuring a selection of print, film and web based media, the exhibition will be a showcase of the finest works created over the duration of the degree.
“Students start out in their Design degree learning a wide variety of creative tools and strategies. By the end of their three years of study they are full of great ideas and fresh ways of thinking, and packed with industry-relevant capabilities. The exhibition project is a chance for them to show themselves off,” says Communication Academic Leader Caroline McCaw.
To bring it all together, the students have stepped up and taken complete control of all aspects surrounding the exhibition, from design and installation to fundraising.
The students have been working hard to make as many friends as possible, selling advertising for their exhibition catalogue, and negotiating deals with local businesses. One friend has come in the form of the Otago Institute of Design (OiD).
OiD General Manager Alistair Regan is “very excited to see this exhibition. Through raising the standards of creativity in communication, the Communication Design students will have more effect on the economic activity of the region than almost any other programme delivered in Otago.”
As for the future, one student has already secured a full time design position in Dunedin, and there are 18 other highly charged designers ready to take on and contribute to the world through design.
“The process of organizing and coordinating Last Word has given our class valuable ‘real world’ experience in teamwork, networking and budgeting. We are now industry ready,” comment Last Word Project Managers Kim Brash and Lisa Richardson.
Last Word is part of EXCITE’09, Otago Polytechnic’s Student Showcase.
17th – 20th November, 12pm – 4pm
