Generating online development

Almost a year ago we invited you to help yourself to online resources when you need it. Wanting to reach as many people as possible, Arts Regional Trust in conjunction with The Big Idea developed 'Generator' an online resource for those moments when you're feeling a bit stuck, not sure what to do next, or wondering how you can grow what you are doing to the next level?

Generator is a self-guided learning resource that helps creative people and organisations take control and help themselves to develop their creative enterprise through a range of practical online tools, tips and problem-solving exercises. Launched on September 6 in 2010, Generator’s mix of case studies of other creative people and lessons they have learnt, articles, discussions and exercises is designed to get creatives moving in the right direction.

And together we've moved in lots of different directions and hopefully helped people come to grips with some tricky topics, beginning with...

Dealing with the personal

Setting goals and staying on track. "Heart-felt and inspiring goals are the keys to staying focussed, even when the going gets tough", says Lorraine Blackley.

Doubting yourself and losing confidence. Sir Peter Ustinov once said ‘Beliefs are what divide people. Doubt unites them.’ So if you have ever felt your confidence ebbing and your self-doubt increasing, you’re not alone. Lorraine Blackley helps explore this sometimes fraught topic.

Getting your mojo back and dealing with the unexpected - this was inspired by our need to offer something to those people in Christchurch, who continue to have to deal with so much

Being focused on the bottom line

The thorny topic of money - it's more than a creative challenge. Lorraine Blackley explored how to understand our attitudes and behaviours toward money.

The juggling act it takes to get things done and really focusing on priorities. 'It’s easy to be crushed by the weight of your own and others’ expectations of what you’ve got to get done – but what can you do to make sure that you are not?', says Sian Jaquet.

Thinking like an artist and working like an entreprenuer, Jana Lyn-Holly shares her insights and experiences in response to this tricky question.

Getting down to the business side of things.

Pitching and just telling your story. You don’t want to be brash, and you definitely don’t want to skite. It’s that fine line between bragging and presenting a good case, says Mark Robotham.

Marketing for the time and money poor. “Get yourself out there,” says Simon Young

Your audience and customers...punters, customers, audiences… we know they are out there but where? Vicki Allpress Hill has some pointers.

Into the future

We plan to continue developing more resources for Generator and while our planning is underway, we want to know what will help you most with online learning. We have developed a survey so that you can have your say.  Our focus will continue to be on practical online tools, tips and problem-solving to help with professional development.
