Music and memory are close companions. Personal moments can come flooding back at the sight of an album cover. Yet the way we listen to music has shifted continually in recent decades, from the 45 record through to the MP3, says Mark Amery.

“Boxes of vinyl records and cassette tapes, which even to look at come embedded with emotion and rich with histories, have often been consigned to the garage. With recorded music comes an uneasy tension between its importance as art and personal memento and its disposability as a commodity.”

Amery reviews an exhibition that rocks between art and music at Adam Art Gallery.

TBI Q&A: Morag Atchison’s typical day can include teaching in the morning, opera rehearsals in the afternoon and vocal coaching at night. “It means that I’m constantly on the go, however I have learnt to compartmentalise my work and if it means that I’m up late working on music, so be it..”

The soprano is currently preparing for her role as Lady-in-waiting for the NBR NZ Opera season of Verdi’s Macbeth.

Win tickets: Ask Morag about her work for a chance to win tickets to Macbeth in Wellington. Use the comment box.

  • Ethicability cover

Corrupt politicians. Financial meltdown. Environmental disasters. Climate change. The greatest challenges we face today are crises of ethics. What are our moral values? How do we decide what’s right and find the courage to do it? How do we display leadership with integrity? How do we nurture cultures where doing the right thing becomes part of our organisational DNA? How do we build a fair and sustainable future for all?

Ethics is no longer optional, it is absolutely crucial to the sustainability and success of our businesses, our public-sector services and every other institution and enterprise.
