The Big Idea fundraising auction

Braided Rakaia by Timon Maxey.

While our Give a Little campaign continues – people have been contacting us with other ideas to help raise the remaining $17,000 shortfall for redesigning The Big Idea website. Thanks to Timon Maxey and other members of The Big Idea community, we have had offers of original artworks and other crafted items to auction. So go to Trade Me and check them out, the first auction closes on Sunday July 5.

But there are some other ways you can show your support. You may have something you want to donate that we can auction on Trade Me. Please email Margaret.lewis@tbi.co.nz Or bid for something, someone else has donated to The Big Idea.

All fundraising starts close to home and one of first givers to these auctions is Margaret Lewis. Already committed to The Big Idea, she looks after our business development, advertising and marketing but in her other life she is an accomplished knitwear designer, having designed knitwear for Whale Rider and winning the Streetwear section of Villa Maria Cult Couture for the last two years and also featuring on the catwalk at Style Pasifika. She has contributed a slew of scarves to our auction.

So bid for them while it’s cold – they’re hot!

The original idea for this fundraising idea came from Timon Maxey. Timon produces unique limited edition pop-art and landscape prints, monoprints and drawings on canvas of dendritic river systems, and cubist landscape paintings. Timon also produces limited edition prints. These are composed on computer using hand-created elements, starting with a loose ink drawing into which painted textures are pasted. The images are then printed onto high quality 300gsm German etching paper, hand numbered and signed in pencil. Timon is offering one of these prints to fundraise for The Big Idea.

We know other people think this is a good idea so watch this space to see what other works are offered to our online auctions.

Fundraising update

Thank you to the 170 people and organisations in The Big Idea community who responded to our call for help. You have raised $3000 so far and we now have $17,000 to go.

About The Big Idea

The Big Idea is New Zealand’s number one online community for the creative sector – and the only website that celebrates success and achievements from every genre.  Anyone can contribute and connect through the site, with members ranging from individual creators to agencies and large public organisations.

The Big Idea seeks to grow the power, strength and capacity of creative people, groups and organisations keen to contribute to New Zealand’s high-value creative economy.

The Big Idea was originally launched in 2001 and it quickly became a vital part of New Zealand’s cultural infrastructure attracting hundreds of thousands of users every year. However, technology and resource limitations meant that The Big Idea could not practically deliver what the community needed. Five years ago, a small creative team at The Big Idea Trust accepted the big challenge of building a new site and after many twists and turns, and a lot of help along the way, the Trust is immensely proud to relaunch The Big Idea as a completely revamped site.

Kia ora . . . Hello there . . .

Thanks to all who have participated in the fundraising drive so far. We've raised $3575 as of 27 June - great! A warm thank you in particular to Margaret and Timon for their generous contribution to The Big Idea's first on-line auction. Bids on their work close on Sunday 5 July.

We're set to continue on-line auctions as a key part of our fundraising ongoing, so if you would like to support The Big Idea in this way by contributing a work for auction, we would love to hear from you :)

Although we still have some way to go to meet our current fundraising target, we're buoyed by and appreciative of the feedback and contribution we've had so far.

Matariki is an especially apt time to acknowledge all we've learned from the year past; it is also a very special time to celebrate the many positive and inspiring ways that communities come together to nurture and sustain their future.

With best wishes . . . Elisabeth Vaneveld
