Topp Twins doco breaks $1 m mark

Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls.

New Zealand film Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls broke the $1 million mark at the New Zealand box office this week, after just four weeks on screen.

Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls directed by Leanne Pooley and starring the iconic Topp Twins, opened on over 50 screens nationwide on April 9th.

NZ Film Commission CEO, Graeme Mason comments “We are proud of our role of bringing New Zealand stories to New Zealanders.  Hitting the million mark means Kiwis are telling their friends that this is film worth seeing on the big screen.”

Distributor, Kelly Rogers from Rialto Distribution added, “This result is fantastic, and truly shows how this uplifting and entertaining film resonates with all New Zealanders.  It is a celebration of not only the twins, but the whole nation.”

It follows the opening weekend success which saw Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls break all records for best opening day and best opening weekend of a New Zealand documentary.  The film now joins the elite group of kiwi films which have reached the $1M mark including Second Hand Wedding, Whale Rider, Sione’s Wedding and The World’s Fastest Indian.

Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls is a film that takes a deeply intimate look at New Zealand’s most beloved twins and is both hilarious and touching.  The Topp Twins are well known as comedy characters, as activists and as entertainers, but the personal story of Jools and Lynda Topp has never been told. This biopic is a celebration of the lives and work of the twins, as well as a metaphor for how far New Zealand has come as a nation.

Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls was produced by Arani Cuthbert of Diva Productions, and was financed by the NZ Film Commission, NZ On Air and Sweeney Vesty.
