NZSO Principal Trombonist wins Tui
New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Principal Trombonist David Bremner has scooped the Tui for Best Classical Album, for his debut solo album Gung-Ho: Virtuoso Works for Trombone, at last night’s Vodafone Music Awards.
A native of New Plymouth and former student of New Plymouth Boys High, David Bremner is a versatile musician. He has recorded with the New Zealand rock band Crowded House and is seen regularly on television as a member of TVNZ’s Dancing with the Stars band.
Gung-Ho: Virtuoso Works for Trombone is recorded on the Atoll label and includes a number of New Zealand compositions including "Panic" by Kenneth Young, Gareth Farr’s Funambulistic Strains, one of a series of commissions by the NZSO made to pair up its principal musicians with New Zealand composers, as well as the title work Gung-Ho by Chris Gendall, a commission for this CD by Gendall who is currently studying composition in New York.
David Bremner’s passion for music education is evident in his numerous leadership roles: as Director of Education for Brass Bands New Zealand, as the Trombone tutor at the New Zealand School of Music and as Music Director of the Pelorus Trust Wellington Brass Band.
As Principal Trombone of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra since 2002, David Bremner has performed a number of solo concertos.
