Caitlin Smith to launch 'miracle' new album
Caitlin Smith’s new album, due for release in May, was originally called Easier Said Than Done. The title, she says with a wry smile, was prophetic.
Extortion, a phone company erasing song “seeds”, drummer dramas and studio nightmares were just some of the obstacles that delayed the release, she says.
Now, however, she is looking forward to the launch of her second solo album, renamed You Have Reached Your Destination. A nationwide promotional tour is planned for 2010 and 2011. She also plans to reach an international audience by performing overseas at arts and music festivals.
A $15,000 New Work grant from Creative New Zealand enabled Smith to record the 14 original songs on her new album. There are songs about alcoholism, co-dependency, love, loss and “blind faith”.
“I don’t really do romantic songs,” she says. “I write songs that give voice to stories other people want to tell, but sometimes can’t.”
Song poet and performer
Described in the media as “one of Auckland best-known jazz vocalists” or an “icon of the New Zealand music industry”, Smith describes herself as a “song poet and performer”.
Watching her perform, there is no indication that she’s partially sighted – except when she tells her audience. With 10 per cent vision in one eye, five per cent in the other, total colour-blindness and extreme light sensitivity, Smith builds rapport with her audience, and delights with her extraordinary voice, storytelling and musicianship.
“I’m a gigging musician and you learn your craft on the job,” she explains. “Performing assists me when I teach and my teaching informs my performance.”
Mentioning her vision impairment isn’t something she does to gain sympathy. She does it to raise awareness. “I don’t do music for entertainment. It’s very political for me and in almost every gig, I mention my sight. The more that disabled people explain how they see things, their view and their place in the world, the more people are able to understand and accept diversity and difference.”
Asking people about their access needs
Arts For All: opening doors to disabled people, published by Creative New Zealand in partnership with Arts Access Aotearoa in late 2009, features a photo of Caitlin Smith in full voice. Here, she talks about the importance of asking people what their access needs are rather than making assumptions.
For her, access is as much about accessing the means of production (vocally, musically and creatively) as it is about access to other artists’ work.
“In most workplaces, the onus in on the employer to make things accessible for workers,” she says. “But in my workplace, the music industry, there is no special accommodation.”
A full-time professional musician, Smith performs at least twice a week, and is a voice and songwriting coach. She also writes the column Finding Your Own Voice for New Zealand Musician magazine. Her students have included Nesian Mystik, The D4, The Datsuns, Ardijah and Anika Moa, and she has taught at several tertiary institutions in Auckland.
“Politics is also my reason for teaching,” she explains. “I want people to have access to music and writing.”
Politics and music
In 1990, Smith began studying towards a degree in music but after two weeks, she switched to a broader arts degree – graduating in 1995 with a first-class masters degree in politics.
In 1997, she joined up with guitarists Steve Gerrish and Graeme Webb to form The Fondue Set. In addition to regular gigs around Auckland and festivals in Australiasia, the group produced two CDs (Stick a Fork in It and In a Blue Vein) before disbanding.
The Fondue Set is temporarily reforming to promote the release of a third album called Down to the Rind, recorded during the Taupo Arts Festival 2004 and due for release in April.
She now performs a weekly residency at Hotel De Brett in Auckland as The Caitlin Smith Trio with Kevin Field and Olivier Holland.
Smith self-produced, financed and released an acclaimed debut album of originals entitled Aurere with The Caitlin Smith Group in 2005.
“It’s very representative of who I am as an independent artist and I’m extremely proud of it,” she says. “And when my new album comes out, I’ll be even more proud of that. It will be a miracle.”
