21 Years, 21 Downloads

Flying Nun Records has teamed up with downtothewire.co.nz to celebrate 21 years of the Internet in New Zealand.

To coincide with the launch of the website downtothewire.co.nz – The Story of New Zealand’s Internet (Monday October 11), we are offering a free download a day.

Each track corresponds with a moment in the label’s history, starting with Jean-Paul Sartre Experience’s ‘Inside and Out’ from their 1989 album ‘The Size of Food’. A new track will be added to the site each day until Sunday October 31.

“We’re delighted to recognize how the Internet in New Zealand has shaped our lives. It seemed only natural to have a rummage through our back catalogue, dig out some tracks and provide them in this format,” Flying Nun manager Roger Shepherd says.

“The Internet has had a huge transformative effect on music, the way it is created, heard and shared. Such a pity it can’t do anything about the weather.”

Downtothewire.co.nz is a project to celebrate and document the story of the Internet in New Zealand. The site includes video material presented by Madeleine Sami and editorial content featuring over 60 of the nation’s most notable internet personalities. It tells the remarkable story of how the first connection was made and how, over the following 21-years New Zealanders made use of it to revolutionise our lives.
