Creative support for Christchurch

The creative community throughout New Zealand are supporting and raising funds for Christchurch, including the Court Jesters who came together at Theatre Royal Nelson for a ‘Comedy for Christchurch’ show.

One of the Court Jesters Jeff Clark was working in The Court Theatre when the quake struck, and as he told The Big Idea, the event “is a way to feel normal, being able to laugh and forget about it, even if it’s just for a few hours.”

“In times of stress the arts play an important role to bring us together to share a positive experience, rather than a horrible one.”

Here are some fundraising events and requests for assistance below.

Update: We are no longer adding to this page but  you can find more from the creative community on The Big Idea here.

Share yours by listing your events, and adding opportunities for others to help. Please include the keyword Christchurch Earthquake 2011.

On Saturday February 26th a team of Kiwi and U.S filmmakers came together in New York City to film a message of strength to send to Christchurch, New Zealand. The plan was simple: do whatever it takes to raise awareness in NYC, raise funds to rebuild Christchurch and deliver a message of strength to survivors of the February 22nd earthquake.

With the support of the Kea North America, Goldcrest Post New York, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and with the help of individuals across Manhattan this project was conceived in two days and filmed and edited in one day in order to broadcast the message at a time when the people of Christchurch may need to hear it the most.

The creative team hope that the concept spreads worldwide and inspires Kiwis living abroad to generate their own message of hope and strength to deliver to Christchurch. They hope the next team does it bigger and better and raises the stakes in terms of stirring up donations to help Christchurch rebuild.

So far this movement has garnered at least USD$10,000 pledged to ANZA (American New Zealand Association) with promise of more to follow. The team noted the difficulty in raising funds in an international environment and supplied links at the end of their film project to non-profit organizations that make it easy to donate towards rebuilding Christchurch.

Reggae Band to Donate Proceeds to Christchurch Earthquake

In light of the devastation caused by the Christchurch earthquake, many have offered support to those in need. Some have given food supplies, blood and monetary donations while others have travelled down to the garden city to offer their skills.

For Wellington reggae band Tomorrow People, they wanted to give something that their combined talents have manifested. “We felt so helpless watching it on the news today, the boys and I really wanted to do something” says lead singer Liam Va’ai. With their debut single 2 weeks away from release, Tomorrow People have taken to their Facebook page to announce that all proceeds made from the sale of their single will be donated to the Red Cross earthquake relief fund. “The song is called ‘Feel Alright’ and this is what the song is all about: Those that are fortunate need to help those that are less fortunate” continues Liam.

The single which is due to be officially released on the 14th March features the talents of Hawaiian reggae group Kolohe Kai. “The message in the song is one of spreading the aloha, and having Kolohe Kai collaborating strengthens the message that much more” says manager Tana Tupai. Tomorrow People have only been together for over a year, yet they continue to make waves in the NZ reggae music scene. ‘Feel Alright’ will be no exception.
