New Artists Show

ARTSPACE is pleased to announce the annual New Artists Show for 2009. The New Artists Show is a highlight of the Auckland exhibition calendar and acts as a showcase of emerging national talent.

ARTSPACE director Emma Bugden and her team of 2009 interns, Robyn Pickens (Curatorial Intern 2009) and Harold Grieves (Writing Intern 2009) have transformed the form of this exhibition by giving three artist run initiatives the opportunity to present work at ARTSPACE in their own authentic way.

ARSPACE has invited artist groups that are geographically and culturally diverse; Newcall, a central Auckland based gallery and studio program run by a collective of recent Elam graduates, Fresh Gallery Otara, a Manukau City Council initiative for contemporary Pacific art, and Dunedin’s long-running, enigmatic performance space, None.

“It’s important to us that ARTSPACE acknowledge the support structures which exist around New Zealand for emergent art, and to work in partnership with them to build new audiences and a wider understanding of the role they play” Says ARTSPACE Director Emma Bugden

Each space has approached the challenge of the New Artists Show in a different way; None is beaming live performances from Dunedin, Fresh offers a take on hair straightening that reveals larger cultural forces at play. Meanwhile, members of Newcall Gallery are curating an exhibition of six artists and presenting their journal, Matters.

Combining and contrasting these strongly varied approaches together at ARTSPACE offers a unique viewpoint and a chance to glimpse both a snapshot of cutting edge art practice and the communities it comes from.
