Tales of Mystery & Imagination
Geoff Murphy’s genre-busting new film Tales of Mystery and Imagination will have its world premiere during this year’s NZ International Film Festival.
Tales of Mystery & Imagination is a film-and-music interpretation of the gothic poetry and short stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
New Zealand film director, Geoff Murphy, has teamed up with talented young saxophonist and composer, Paris-based Lucien Johnson and Wellington cult band Village of the Idiots to turn a unique musical suite into an accessible documentary/music film.
During the film the musicians talk about Poe, music, life and death.
“Film noir, Prog Rock, Circus, Freak-show, Trance, Funeral Brass Band, Voodoo... The stylistic lineages fuse and collide in an imaginary and primordial musical landscape.
The show explodes with acid humour, and avoiding the morbid, constantly swings and rebounds between intense ruminations on the prospect of death and the exhilaration and quintessence this brings to life.” - Lucien Johnson
Premiere: Wellington’s Paramount Theatre, Friday 31 July, 830pm followed by a party in the Paramount Lounge.
