From the Depths of Suburbia

Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts has been chosen to feature the thought-provoking Australian touring exhibition ‘From the Depths of Suburbia’ which features photographs of Auckland.

It will be the first and only New Zealand gallery to hold the exhibition which has attracted great attention in Australia. The exhibition opens on Saturday 25th July, with an Opening Preview event at 2pm.

Originally from Auckland, Australian based curator Serena Bentley has put together an exhibition of Auckland photography which as she says ‘explores both the universal and particular aspects of suburban culture’.

The photographs range from Steve Carr’s slightly disturbing deadpan portrait of a grandpa wearing ill-fitting prosthetic teeth, to Conor Clarke’s perversely manicured suburban gardens.

Te Tuhi’s Curator Stephen Cleland says the exhibition sheds a humorous light on our suburban landscape and its occupants.

“The exhibition offers fresh perspectives on easily overlooked aspects of suburban culture and I am certain that all in the community will get much enjoyment out of the exhibition” he says.

Over the three months of the exhibition Te Tuhi will be putting on a series of talks with the photographers.

Public Programmes Coordinator, Renee Tanner, says the talks are particularly aimed at emerging artists.

“This will offer a great opportunity for emerging photographers to meet and learn from some of Auckland’s top photographic talents.”
