It pays these days to be UNDER 25!

The NBR New Zealand Opera’s sexy, funny and energetic new production of Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers, opening in Wellington on Saturday 9 May, is designed for all age groups but will particularly resonate with a younger demographic – and anyone aged under 25 can attend for just $25!

From 9:00am on the day of the show, under 25 year olds who present their ID in person at the St James Theatre box office are eligible for the $25 ticket price, subject to ticket availability. Under 25s tickets cannot be reserved or put on hold, and only one ticket per ID can be purchased. Any ID that shows proof of age is accepted.

The opera company’s daring new take on this opera is a night of pure escapism and zany comedy, a chance for audiences to kick back and have a thoroughly good time while being transported to sizzling Algiers – a heady hotbed of polygamy, piracy and plotting.

Under the directorship of the inimitable Colin McColl, the vibrant cast and creative team inject a dynamism into the production for which several top New Zealand singers take lead roles. These include London-based mezzo soprano Wendy Dawn Thompson – now a major name overseas – who returns to sing Isabella, and the irrepressible Conal Coad in the role of the lusty Mustafa.

The Italian Girl in Algiers is sung in Italian with English surtitles and returns to Wellington stages after an absence of more than 20 years. A collaboration with Scottish Opera, the production travels to Scotland for a series of performances in October following its New Zealand season.
