New Zealand Book Month

From Northland to Southland, hundreds of people are creating community events around reading, writing, losing themselves in their lover’s arms, curing world hunger, and rhyming with Hairy Maclary. We call these people “Book Activists”.

The New Zealand Book Month campaign is now in its fourth year and Our Voice, Our Choice, is this year’s theme. We’re bringing people together to talk, think, laugh, remember, and share some of our great Kiwi stories throughout the month of October.

Events to look forward to include… the TVNZ7 Gala Debate with Emily Perkins, Finlay Macdonald, and Te Radar as MC, and the Ladies’ Litera-Tea tea party that always has people gasping at the door for tickets. You can prove you own the best loved Edmonds Cookbook; compare photos of your Hairy Maclary lookalike; take part in the Great New Zealand Literature Quiz (if you’re a member of the Timaru District Library); turn an old library book into a book sculpture; plant a Beanstalk and make a Scarecrow (if you’re over 9 and live in Whangarei); compare the best chocolate cake recipes in a bake-off; help write The October Book on Facebook; solve the missing book character mystery; impersonate Barry Crump at the simultaneous brown bag lunch; attempt the Guinness World Record for the largest ensemble of ukulele; find out why dogs sniff bottoms; and add some sparkle to your day with Dr Glam.

These events are just a wee taste of what we’ve in store for the Month.

From the Gala Launch on Thursday 1 October through to One Hell of a Book Sale on Halloween (remember to dress up) – it’ll be a month long, rollicking literary adventure all month, this October.

    New Zealand Book Month

New Zealand Book Month (NZBM) began in 2006 and runs each September, showcasing New Zealand books and writers in the media, the web, and within a huge national events calendar.
The Month works to create a fresh new message about reading on a popular and very public basis. We work with a variety of literary organisations, publishers, booksellers, celebrities and charities to try and increase the spotlight on New Zealand writing across the board.
