Matariki Music Night - He Po Whakanui
Celebrate Matariki and pay homage to the great Maori Music Composer Dr Hirini Melbourne at ‘Matariki – He Po Whakanui’ at the Corban Estate Arts Centre on Friday 18th June.
Outstanding musicians; Anna Coddington, Tama Waipara, Awanui Reeder (Nesian Mystic), Maitreya, Ria Hall, Katera Maihi, Majic Paora and Mel Davis; will come together to perform some of Dr Melbourne’s greatest waiata and give them their own unique flavour.
“The opportunity to perform Hirini’s music is an honour and a privilege and a dream I have had for many, many years. I believe he is one of our greatest composers and I have loved his music since I was a child.” (Tama Waipara)
“The swirling organic sounds of taonga puroro (traditional wind instruments), the voices and instruments of these gifted rangatahi (young people) and those who inspire them, and the music of one of Aotearoa’s foremost contemporary Maori Music Composers fuse together in an intimate gallery setting to create an unforgettable evening of sound” (Aroha Rawson, event organizer).
The music night is part of a greater project ‘He Rangi Paihuarere’, by Ngatapa Black and Dr Melbourne’s niece Peata Melbourne. The two are currently working towards producing a CD, DVD and book of rangatahi interpretations of the songs and music of the late Dr Melbourne. “What we want to do is to present his songs to a new generation of New Zealanders, both Maori and the rest of the population” (Peata Melbourne).
Dr Melbourne (1949 – 2003) was devoted to promoting Maori music, language and culture. He is widely recognised for retrieving taonga puroro from its resting place in New Zealand’s museums and re establishing its place in Maori music.
‘Matariki – He Po Whakanui’. Honoring the past and looking to the future with interpretations of the songs of Dr Hirini Melbourne. At 8pm on Friday 18th June at the Corban Estate Arts Centre, Henderson.
Tickets cost $20 and include supper.
