NZSO free concert for Christchurch
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert in Christchurch next week in the wake of Saturday’s earthquake.
The orchestra has announced it will proceed with its planned concert at the Christchurch Town Hall on Thursday 16 September despite the quake. However, entry will now be free of charge.
The NZSO hopes the concert will offer local people a chance to enjoy some relief from the stress of recent days, with an evening of classical music.
NZSO Chief Executive Peter Walls says, “Many among the orchestra have family and friends caught up in the devastating consequences of the earthquake. This is our way of showing our support for the Christchurch community.”
Mayor of Christchurch Bob Parker says the free concert will be a welcome respite for local residents.
“After the hardships of the last few days, I’m really pleased the NZSO is offering the people of Christchurch an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company, and wonderful symphonic music.
“I encourage everyone who is able to come along and share in the evening.”
The Soundscapes concert features Scottish percussion star Colin Currie and the NZSO performing the concert hall bestseller Veni, Veni, Emmanuel by James Macmillan.
The Orchestra will also perform works by Maurice Ravel and Richard Strauss, and the Four Seas Interludes from the Benjamin Britten opera Peter Grimes.
Concert-goers can reserve seats by calling Ticketek on 0800 842 538, or by arriving on the night. Seats are subject to availability.
Anyone who has already purchased a Soundscapes ticket can approach the NZSO desk inside the venue on the night and receive a voucher entitling them to free admission to an NZSO concert of their choice until June 2011. Ticket-holders will maintain their allocated seats.
The NZSO will continue to liaise closely with local authorities and monitor developments in Christchurch.
