Self-portraits take first prize

Clay Bodvin - Remade Memory #3 - First Place,Self-Portrait,, WPGA 2010

Borrowing from the notion of ‘the usable past’ Clay Bodvin went about selecting pics from an old childhood photo album.

And, by merging them with images of found interiors and remade spaces, the artist has produced a category winning series in the just announced 2010 WPGA Annual Pollux Awards.

In making his choices, Philip Brookman (Chief Curator and Head of Research at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC) reviewed and processed 18,912 images from 65 countries.

He said "...each work, in its own way, provides a subjective experience for the viewer — one rooted in the artist’s experience — which allows us to bring our own understanding to these images."

Bodvin’s first-prize ‘Self Portrait - Portfolio’ is represented by the image (seen above) of a cowboy-child. Creating new visual narratives by investigating the relationship between portraiture and the still life - as tokens of their types.

Merging images from childhood photo-albums with familiar domestic objects; inserting them into stylized, contemporary rooms, spaces or found interiors.

Investigating the combinings of human and possession - to re-connect with and thus illuminate my own lived experience.

Making visual the imposition of digital technology over the artistic impulse and the creative gesture.
