Creative Trespass
Artstation’s latest exhibition opening on 13 July is Creative Trespass: Terms of Engagement. It features artists, Dieneke Jansen, Allan McDonald and Layne Waerea who are interested in photographic media and their relationship with our social environment.
In a time when society is becoming increasingly regulated these artists test the boundaries of public space with creative acts that are a form of trespass. Their work investigates issues of gentrification, globalisation, regulation, compliance and surveillance in public spaces.
Layne Waerea’s moving image works, ‘Silent Injunctions’ includes acts of private performance in public spaces such as guerrilla lawn mowing in the suburbs of Remuera and Orakei.
“I am interested in the regulatory acts we choose to perform, in everyday life. These injunctions serve to interrupt that rhythm, but only momentarily,” says artist Layne Waerea.
Allan McDonald uses the Cross Street walkways to stage ideas of the virtual city
“The project does this by mixing the tropes of documentary and interventionist practices to perform two texts from urbanist Paul Virillo which question our position in the dematerialised or virtual city,” says artist Allan MacDonald.
Dieneke Jansen’s photographic series follows the format of a progressive diner across different parks and reserves to question the perceived ownership, access and purpose of public spaces.

Artstation is the Auckland Council’s community visual arts facility located in the old police barracks at 1 Ponsonby Road, Newton. It is easy to get to by bus, and the Link bus stops right outside. Artstation has wheelchair access and a lift. This can be accessed from the front entrance way to the right side of the building from Ponsonby Road.
