Wild Things
Madeleine Chld and Philip Jarvis won the prestigious Wild Creations residency offered by the Department of Conservation and Creative New Zealand in 2010 bringing them to Rotorua for a summer of creativity inspired by the local environment.
They were stationed at a DOC residence at Lake Tarawera with access to the beauty and splendor of the mountain vista, and visited the Rotorua District Library regularly to add support to their investigations.
The result is a show of colourful works that explore the rich volcanic history of the region alongside a sculptural exploration of introduced weeds in the lakes themselves.
Part history, part environmentally aware this show will surprise and delight.
Child and Jarvis are contemporary ceramicists, well known for working with that media. In this show new materials were used in an attempt at portability, however the signature of their quirky style is very much present.
