Psyche Out Cinema Series
Wellington is full to brimming with movie theatres, many of them showing independent or festival films, and very successfully too. But for cinema-goers seeking something seriously left of centre the New Zealand Film Archive has Other Cinema. Created by 40 - something San Franciscan, Craig Baldwin the Other Cinema series has gained a cult following overseas and the Film Archive are pleased to have three of the mind-bending "collage" films to screen.
Looting the media of America's past, Craig Baldwin and his Other Cinema series present a retrospective vision of an alarmingly authoritarian culture. The films are pieced together from lost film trailers, forgotten advertisements, corporate and educational films made in the era of the Cold War. Cutting and pasting scenes Baldwin simultaneously creates a new film and provides a chilling reminder of life in the not so distant past.
The Film Archive screens Spectres of the Spectrum, Experiments in Terror and Sonic Oddities on Thursdays at 7pm from 10 March until 28 April.
