Talk: Andreas Lange - Computer Games as Digital Artefacts
in association with C:/DOS/RUN- remembering the 80s' computer

In the past few years computer games have been recognised as important digital artefacts. The question is now how do we preserve them for the future? The task of preserving the games and making them accessible for us, and future generations will be a major challenge. This question gains even more interest if one keeps in mind that the answers are not only of great importance to the gamer community, but are of interest to society as a whole as well. Museums and libraries also have an increasing amount of digital-born artefacts to handle. This talk raises the question of how this goal of long-term preservation could be achieved and shows what solutions are already developed in the gamer community.

Andreas Lange established the Berlin Computer Game Museum, in 1997, which has been influential in discussing games' cultural importance. He is currently preparing an exhibition entitled "PONG Mythos". Lange is also the CEO and creator of DiGA e.V. - The Digital Game Archive, dedicated to the preservation of games. He is visiting the Media Studies Programme at Victoria University of Wellington in October, courtesy of the International Science and Technology Linkages Fund of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
