Taking the Waewae Express
Taking The Waewae Express is the first feature of Wellington filmmakers Andrea Bosshard and Shane Loader. The film premieres at Paramount Theatre in Wellington on June 18th at 8.30pm.
Developed using the improvisational processes of British director Mike Leigh, this micro-budget feature shot on high-definition is a story sourced straight out of our community. It centres around the death of a young man in a foolish and avoidable car accident. When Wiremu's younger brother dies in a car accident, blame and bitterness take their toll as love and loyalty are tested within his circle of friends and family.
It looks at the impact of this on his friends and family and particularly his best mate who was driving and caused the accident.
"I've driven drunk before, I've driven stoned, too fast, spun out heaps of times."
"Yeah, but you never killed anyone."
Nevertheless life goes on. It is still possible to fall in love, to laugh again, to play soccer and to sing. But it takes courage to move on and unless you take the first step, you can't take the next.
A story with a particular (and unfortunately tragic) resonance in New Zealand, the film abounds with authenticity, engaging characters, warmth and unexpected humour.
With local actor Rangimoana Taylor, the young and cosmopolitan cast tells a story that is low key, tender, funny and wise.
