Aran Sisley

A bit about

I am a freelance sculptor working in the New Zealand film, television,
and advertising industry. I predominantly work in clay, but am also
skilled in wax sculpture, polystyrene carving, jewellery making, and
modelmaking. My preferred scales to work in are 1/4 to 1/6, but I can
work in any scale.

I sculpt design maquettes, prototypes, props, and sets.

Big Idea

I believe that a formal artistic education is not necessary to become an accomplished artistisan. With the advent of the internet as a conduit of information almost everything you get taught in a formal course can now be found online. The only difference being that you must learn from text and pictures rather than from actual hands-on demonstrations. This can result in longer learning times and more mistakes, but this route also creates a wealth of accumulated experience as a beginner teaches themself, with a certain amount of trial and error, how to create in new ways and with new mediums. I encourage all people with an interest in creating objects of art to research their chosen field and not to be afraid to give things a go without any formal artistic training. I like to think that people will judge my skill level based on my creations and not by the courses that I have attended or the pieces of paper I have been awarded.
