Facilitating the development and presentation of Innovative and experimental art in all art forms via a high profile annual Festival.
- Big Idea
The Dunedin Fringe Arts Trust was established in 2004 to produce the Dunedin Fringe Festival. While this is still its core purpose, in recent years it has taken on a number of other projects including:
- managing the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival
- running four Pecha Kucha Nights in Dunedin
- hosting the Dunedin office of the South Island Dance Network. The Dunedin Fringe Festival is an annual festival of contemporary and innovative art produced by the Dunedin Fringe Arts Trust, a non-profit organisation. The Dunedin Fringe was initiated in 2000 alongside the Otago Festival of the Arts and was held biennially. In recent years the Fringe has struck out on its own and is now an annual Festival held in late March. These dates follow the Wellington and Adelaide Fringe Festivals and are just prior to the New Zealand Comedy Festival.
The focus of the Fringe Festival is on art and performance that is experimental, provocative and entertaining. The Dunedin Fringe is an open-access Festival where artists register independent events that are then promoted by the Festival. The Festival features emerging and established artists from throughout New Zealand as well as overseas guests.
