SmackBang Theatre Co. is run by Charles Unwin and Tainui Tukiwaho. However, it is made up of all the brilliant writers, actors, directors, and other professional theatre practitioners who contribute their time, skill and energy into creating bold new homegrown theatre.
SmackBang Theatre Co.is epitomised by our name. It's energetic, exciting, blood-pumping theatre at its best. We want to help revive, encourage, and promote Auckland's locally made theatre. There are many great professional theatres in Auckland but we have created a company where theatre makers can get help to create new work and instigate new ideas. We aim to maximise access to theatre for all emerging, talented, and serious theatre practitioners. SmackBang's overall objective is to make theatre accessible and relevant by encouraging playwrights from a diverse range of areas and backgrounds to submit plays for future productions.
PlayRight is one of NZ's premier playwright competitions. However, what separates PlayRight from other writing competitions in NZ is that it is the only one that offers writers the rare and valuable opportunity of having works actually produced. SmackBang sees this as the number one opportunity writers need if they are to develop their craft. The end result is three one-act plays, at around thirty minutes each, rehearsed over a long development period including script readings. These are the best one-act plays New Zealand has to offer in 2009.
What better way to develop the skills and profile of a writer than to have their work read aloud to an audience by professional actors and then performed in a season with a professional director and acting team in a well established venue?
