- A bit about
Te Puna Toi was established in 2001 by the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the University of Canterbury in order to provide a New Zealand-centred platform for performance research. Te Puna Toi organises conferences, symposia, collaborations and events that encourage local and international artists to come together to explore, devise, produce, discuss, write about and create experiments in the production of avant-garde theatre, performance and film. Te Puna Toi is also committed to developing archival resources in collaboration with its primary partners, the New Zealand Film Archive (Wellington) and the Centre for Performance Research (Aberystwyth, Wales), and Te Puna Toi is the Christchurch host for the New Zealand Film Archive’s public viewing programme, Medianet.
- Big Idea
Performance research combines scholarly inquiry with artistic practice, so that the concept of “performance” not only shapes our understanding of the material under investigation but also becomes the way in which that investigation is pursued. Performance research thus offers diverse theatre, performance and film scholars and artists from a wide range of disciplines a way of working experimentally between theory and practice, between the local and the international, and between the avant-garde and the traditional. In New Zealand, as in many postcolonial contexts, performance research is especially useful as a way of producing new ideas about the performance of encounter and identity between cultures – in particular, between the European and the Maori, but also amongst European, Maori, Pasifika, Asian and other peoples, as New Zealand becomes increasingly multi-cultural in its orientation.
