- A bit about
In my art practice I like to explore ideas that intrigue me, comment on the world around me, find creative solutions to problems, and respond to the physicality of using a variety of art materials by combining materials in new and dynamic ways. My art can be broadly categorised into concept-driven work and aesthetic/expessive work.
I grew up in the beautiful, dramatic, wild, confronting landscape of New Zealand. I have lived and worked in several locations around New Zealand and in Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, and enjoy engaging in cross-cultural dialogue through my art. The Border Crossing Art Project is one of the ways I am connecting with people cross culturally.
In February-March 2010, The Border Crossing Art Project collaborative touring exhibition, workshop and forums was presented at The Art Center, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand and will tour to The Light Square Gallery, Adelaide, South Australia in September.
Also in February-March 2010, I presented Rural Go Go, a solo exhibition at Jamjuree Art Gallery, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.
- Big Idea
Wendy Grace Allen explores twin bodies of work in her art practice. In one strand of her portfolio, her ideas, and the process of creating work that responds to those ideas, dictate the media she employs in the creation of her artwork. Her oeuvre embodies a diverse range of media including bronze, glass, ceramic, chocolate, seaweed, lard, fabric, paint and paper. Wendy's work is informed by living and working cross culturally. Her artwork frequently explores the nexus between cultures or in-between spaces (the Japanese concept of ma and the Pacific Island concept of ta va) and often responds directly to a current social issue. She particularly enjoys creating collaborative, site-specific, and interactive works often utilising light, space and sculptural forms informed by an interest in architecture and design. Wendy's performances have included wearable art, poetry and collaborations with composers and musicians.
In the other strand of her portfolio, Wendy enjoys an expressive journey, exploring the creative process through the immediacy of paint and the manipulation of other media. This body of work celebrates the process of creating, capturing a moment, responding to the artist's environment, memory or experience in a more immediately tactile and poetic manner. She drips, pours, dots, flicks and swirls paint, ink and other media as she moves across the surface of the work. Two dimensional artworks burst from the flattened picture plane as they are moulded to create dynamic three dimensional forms blurring the boundary between painting and sculpture. Colourful ceramics, glass and beads enliven surfaces in the form of mosaics.
Underpinning both strands of Wendy's work are her faith in, and experience of, a creative God. Another influence in her work is her enduring connection to her homeland. Wendy's response to land and place, her turanga wai wai, her place to stand, is formed by her experience of growing up in the beautiful, dramatic, wild, confronting landscape of New Zealand.
