NEIL CRAIK - GLASS ARTIST
Born in Oamaru, New Zealand, now living in Auckland.
In 1995 I was planning to build a new home. At the same time I decided to take an Adult Learning class in Leadlighting one night a week so that I could add my own touch to the house by installing beautiful windows. The results were so successful that by 1998 was tutoring the class and continued to do so this until I recently moved to Auckland in mid-2011.
In 2005 I took a course in hot glass and fusing in Christchurch and became a hopeless kiln addict. I thoroughly enjoy the challenges of transforming ‘hard’ sharp surfaces into soft smooth pieces of art.
I spent many years of my life outside playing sport and enjoying the natural environment. My love of the outdoors is reflected in the designs based around our native flora and wildlife. I believe we are fortunate here in New Zealand to be surrounded by Maori and Pasifika traditional motifs and designs. I love incorporating these in to my art work.
Glasfame (ryhmes with Blasphemy) is my business name. My glass art range includes jewellery, candle holders, wall tiles, wall art and leadlighting. I am available to repair and create new leadlight windows, doors, panels, cabinets and even splash backs with fused glass.- Big Idea
Part of my philosophy is to incorporate recycled glass material wherever possible in to my work. These can be off-cuts from glaziers or old windows and doors from demolition businesses. It is satisfying to transform an unwanted piece of glass into a new “treasure”.
If any one has old glass panels tucked away somewhere we would love to hear from them especially those loving old retro ones.
