The Sole Project
The Sole Project: The Exhibition is the result of a powerful collaboration between two distinct Auckland communities – practicing artists committed to using their skills to mentor youth, and the rangatahi of South Auckland alternative education. As part of the wider event series of the 2011 program of Nga Rangatahi Toa Creative Arts Initiative, the exhibition reflects the kaupapa of providing transformational life experiences for at-risk rangatahi through one-to-one mentoring in creative arts.
The artworks featured in this exhibition traverse the spectrum of artistic mediums, from photography, to aerosol art, to animation and abstract painting. Each of the works is a culmination of the creative exploration made by the 10 collaborative partnerships of the rangatahi and their mentor-artist during The Sole Project workshops held the week prior to the exhibition. The work of the mentors and the rangatahi artists make The Sole Project: The Exhibition a celebration and validation of the positive creative voice that is not always heard, and shows the world through the eyes of those who are not always seen.
