- Roger Kelly
RedOrange Design was established in 2006 by artist and designer Roger Kelly in response to my ambition to run a design led business that allows me to further explore the relationships between the aesthetics of form and the function of useful objects in our built environment.
I am committed to designing for the needs of today where function, space, diversity, sustainability and narrative are paramount. Design is not just about styling, it is an intellectual process and a response to changing needs, and challenges our perception of how we live and work.
With an interest and pride in NZ culture both at home and abroad, RedOrange Design designs and develops quality NZ inspired furniture and accessories that will provide buyers with a sense of enjoyment and pride in their purchase.
I originally trained as an engraver in the mid 1980’s. Here I learned the skills of creating textured two dimensional patterns and a variety of manufacturing processes. At the same time I was developing an interest in the imagery of local fauna and flora as an artistic expression
Prior to establishing RedOrange Design I was employed at the Christchurch Polytechnic within the Bachelor of Design programme as a 3D technician in the Art and Design Faculty. After four years I was invited to tutor 3D design within the Interior Architecture / Architectural Technology degree programme. It was with this work that my interest in design for the built environment gained momentum, using furniture design as a tool for the exploration of form and function.
The aim of RedOrange Design is to design quality functional pieces that meet the needs of the manufacturing sector for small run production, yet delight the discerning buyer who values creativity and individuality. My work draws inspiration from our natural environment; shape, colour, texture and pattern are strong elements found in my work. I utilise these interests, my experience and skills to manifest new ideas through the design process, exploring the inherent qualities of material and prototyping new forms. My capabilities enable me to design for both the domestic and commercial markets at home and abroad. I am happy to custom design an item to fulfil your needs.
