from the sky
Startling. At once pictorial and sculptural.-
the phenomena of invisible waves/ radio waves that permeate the atmosphere-
the energy of this movement is communicated both indexically and iconically within the one piece.
indexically in the rhythms of the rippling forms,
iconically in the relative flatness of the tripartite top element- it is as if an 'article' has landed and is knowingly for display- almost as if it is showing off!
in this sense the sculpture recalls the spirit of the so-called classical phase of postmodernism and its move away from a purist (gestalt) unity to include the quotidian, and introduce a deliberately difficulty and dissonance btween 2d and 3d elements.
here, the top element stands both as an object that is given discreteness (from the sky),the invisible made visible- up for display- exhibited as an image -almost an artificiality. and yet, in so far as its rhythms echo the nerve-sheath of the plinth, it is inseparably connected, reconnected to the ubiquitous shimmering nature from whence it came-
a sample that has come to a port. .
resolutely simple, even whimsical in its individual elements and yet complex and measured as a whole. playful, yet cannot be dismissed as a decorative insouciance because of the complexity of this interplay of elements- gives it the sense of being analytical- (the interruption of the two rippling forms by the table, the relation between table and base.)
-read in this way it becomes a sort of analogue to the topographical view of the psyche- with the image and flim flam resting atop, and sequestered from, the mother energy that provides it.
