Vanish by Gregor Kregor

Vanish by Gregor Kregar installed at Connells Bay Sculpture Park

Gregor Kregar has titled his Connells Bay work, Vanish. This is a most significant work in the artist’s oeuvre. It comprises 160 figures and has an overall footprint of 10x19 metres. It is the largest self portrait work undertaken by Kregar.

Vanish also encompasses a portrait of the anonymous person. The work questions how identity is reduced the more it is reproduced. Traditionally self-portraits projected a romantic and singular image of the artist. Kregar however, tries to suggest that something gets lost every time you double yourself. The more of him there is, the tinier his stand-ins become. Is the artist shrinking or growing? This depends on which way the viewer approaches the work.
