'Breathing In'
Statement on 'Breathing In':
I once stood on a plateau at the foot of a mountain.
With the mountain at my back, I could see several other mountain ridges, nestled in between them were valleys that channelled strong winds towards me. As I breathed in, it was as if I was breathing in the world… everything I was and would be were in those winds.
The layers in this piece are similar to that day, but they represent a broader metaphor to the experience. The winds/ether are the carved glass-like layer floating above the canvas. This layer is actually referenced to a single celled organism called a ‘radiolarian’. I specifically chose this because in reality it is microscopic, but in the piece it can touch the edges of the universe. The canvas is like the plateau, where all our life experiences come together. The orb behind the canvas is that sacred place we each call ‘home’.

Inspired & passionate about art, I practice its creation full time. With a studio in Christchurch, an education in Toronto & a history between the two, I dedicate myself towards the expression of an inner vision. I'm addicted to working with different media: acrylic forms; carved wood; shaped cane... all towards playing with metaphoric layers. I get a huge kick out of Nature, inspired mostly by organic forms. When creating, I'm focused on an outcome that is both aesthetic & spiritually stimulating.
