The artworks are a visual feast, made in collaboration by the participants and the staff of the Papermill.

The papers included in the works are from recycled papers and plants including noxious weeds. All made by hand by the artists at The Papermill. They are then cast, moulded, pleated and formed around mannequins to make outfits Lady Gaga would not be able to resist.

One of the garments is made completely from the seedpod of the mothplant (Araujia) which is on the list of 'most unwanted' plants nationwide. This plant pest has been transformed, creating ‘beauty’ from the ‘beast’.

Another garment has an ‘Avatar’ theme while others utilise native flax.

    The Papermill

This is a very exciting story of a bold and courageous journey for a team of papermakers who are intellectually challenged. The Papermill delivers meaningful work experience and training for people with intellectual disabilities. The project is creative and challenging and its purpose is to lift self-esteem and develop skills. Our approach is unique in that the people are empowered to own what they do.

A significant tourist attraction; as our visitors learn to make paper by hand they have the unique experience of being taught by and working alongside people whose gifts and abilities are different from their own.
