Rakaia River Bracelet
This is part of a body of work made for The Cassleberg Trust's poetry/jewellery event "A New Line", in which eight poets were teamed with eight jewellers and the jewellers were asked to respond to a poem. I was paired with David Eggleton and chose his poem "Orogenesis", which is about the geological process involved in Mountain Building, inspired by his tramping trips in the Southern Alps. I drew on old photographs of what used to be my family's farm at Lake Coleridge, by the Rakaia River in the Canterbury High Country, and made two brooches, this bracelet, a pair of earrings and two rings.
Made from sterling silver, sand from the Rakaia River, resin and nylon cord. That was the first time I had made a bracelet or a box clasp and it took me weeks!
