Mataura Falls Brooch

Sterling silver brooch
Photograph of Mataura Falls

Looking up the Mataura River from the bridge in the township I see a poignant scene.  The Mataura Falls, once much wider and an important kai gathering place, are jammed between the freezing works on one side and the defunct paper mill on the other.  The Mataura RIver is supposed to be one of the best brown trout fisheries in the world, but when I stopped my car on this day to take a photo of the falls the water was dark green, foamy and smelly.
