POYNTON TERRACE PAPER PRINT

ABOUT:

Painted in late 2009 by artists Askew, Berst, Elliot Francis Stewart (Deus) - this is the now infamous mural that was removed illegally by Auckland Council's graffiti task force, sparking public outcry and media frenzy. After Mayor Len Brown made an apology to the artists, building owners and tenants, the Council's attempts at retribution have been frustrating and unnecessarily bureaucratic. This has left the artists themselves out of pocket and unable to repaint the site unless a submission is made to the Council. This wall has become a symbol of the battle between artists working at street level and the Council's inability to understand or appreciate what makes their work relevant and vital in an ever-changing and developing city. With heightened focus on the removal of graffiti across the city in the build up to the Rugby World Cup - Len Brown and the Super City's legacy is already looking grey and devoid of the visual ingredients that make visiting a city a vibrant and exciting experience. This wall in it's current state is a testament to that.

Through this panoramic 8-photo montage shot by Rimoni and constructed digitally by Askew, the artwork itself is captured and can be remembered in it's fresh and original state, the day after it was completed. Regardless of how the powers that be try to dictate public art, through good documentation the work lives forever.

Lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand

Askew One is a multi-disciplinary artist mostly renown for his graffiti art paintings. Widely regarded as one of the New Zealand graffiti scene’s driving forces he has managed to remain at the forefront of the movement whilst working tirelessly behind the scenes in a diverse array of projects.

A restless personality, a touch of ADD mixed with a childhood amidst the 80’s sugary-diets, TV parenting and general explosion of mass pop-culture shaped Askew during his formative years. His work draws greatly from New Zealand’s geographical isolation and it’s subsequent desire to feel inclusion through pop-cultural appropriation. He is particularly intrigued in how trends mutate and break beyond being a caricature of their source. He is currently focussed on helping re-define the New Zealand graffiti aesthetic along with his main contemporaries, members of TMD, RTR and GBAK crews. Steeped in the foundation and tradition of ‘NYC Subway’ influenced graffiti, Askew wishes to see writing thrive in New Zealand, evolve past mere imitation or what he terms ‘Karaoke Painting’.

Although working primarily in aerosol paint, Askew is versed in graphic design, illustration, photography, publishing, music and moving image. He also collated and co-authored a book about New Zealand graffiti, ‘In-Form’ which was a Montana Book Awards finalist in 2008.
