Soul of the Deep
This painting depicts a large carved manaia being towed above the ocean floor by a stingray.
In traditional Maori carving manaia can be seen with a bird’s head and a serpent's tail. Their three fingers of birth, life and death represent the inevitable mortality of mankind. Manaia are said to be the messengers between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits.
In this painting the manaia acts as a spiritual guardian. Although the figure is carved it possesses a realistic eye - that of a humpback whale. Whales are known by many to be highly conscious creatures. They are gentle giants and can create pure, low vibrations that we cannot hear, but our bodies and our senses can experience on many levels. Some call this phenomenon Biological Infrasound.
Like the gracious whales of our ocean, the manaia in this work is here to guide and protect humanity. Its loving and peaceful vibrations are helping us in our own evolution towards an expanded, more compassionate consciousness.
