Kate

Kate collage

Kate started as a pencil sketch of a portable cd player. I then photocopied the drawing and experimented with crayon, felt pen, and paint. The end drawing was stuck on a sheet of newspaper and framed with a cd store bag. This work featured in the SPLICE exhibition at Thistle Hall in December of 2009.

The piece is named after a friend of mine. I see it as a kind of portrait of her but it lately has also come to represent to me a time on the cusp of digital music, online news and mp3 players. The original experimental collage was done in the early 2000's and now things like cd's, cd stores and print media are being made obsolete by their digital and online counterparts.

The frame is wooden and comes with the piece. The frame is functional as the collage itself was stuck on cardboard and not canvas. The frame is also a way to identify the piece as art. The original collage started out as an amateur experiment, it wasn't until I finished it for the SPLICE exhibition that a lot of the meaning was added. To me the frame is reassuring.  It also reinforces the idea that the work is a portrait, as does the name; Kate.

im an amateur 'artist'. i am primarily a painter but am interested in film, writing, photography, collage and for fun, cartoons. i've designed concert posters, painted a mural, made sets and props for productions and have taught a ten week course teaching art techniques to children from 5 to 12 years old. im more into cultural/urban art rather than fine arts and most of my stuff originates from boredom than any kind of discipline.

I am currently trying to finish a work of fiction and develop my writing skills. I was also involved in the SPLICE exhibition at Thistle Hall and hope to be involved in more group exhibitions in the future.
