Exhibition - Descent

In 2007 I found out about a horrific secret that had shaped the lives of many of my male friends. I became fascinated with the way men express and repress emotion. Descent references Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland. Carol based the character of Alice on a real girl whom he had a peculiar relationship with. Carol was upset by Alice’s decent (as he saw it) into womanhood. The hole Alice fell down was a metaphor for this decent.

I have always been interested in the un-captured moment, the un-posed snapshot. Both Snapshot 1 and 2 have been developed from photographs I have taken of male friends private, reflective moments.

Flatness has always been an important part of my aesthetic. Snapshot 1 and 2 have been an interesting progression for me because of the expanding and flattening of space that occurs in the work. The mid tones of the portrait blend with the chaotic background and the vinyl applied to the front surface of the acrylic produces internal shadows.
